How to prepare a CV that an automated system reads well

What usually happens when you submit an application, and how to help your CV read well.

Fact

A widely repeated figure with no source

  • You'll often read that "75% of CVs are automatically rejected".
  • We couldn't find a primary source for that figure: the references that trace it attribute it to a CV-optimization company in 2012, with no published methodology.
  • What does usually happen: an ATS organizes your CV and stores it as structured data, rather than "rejecting" it automatically.
  • Then there's the human factor: in a Kickresume survey (December 2025, 1,004 people, only some of them HR professionals), 62% of those professionals said they reject candidates without reading the full CV, often or occasionally (Kickresume, 2026).
  • It's a small sample of that group: a hint, not a general figure.
Recommendation

A structure that usually reads well

  • A single column.
  • Standard section headings (Experience, Education, Skills) instead of "My journey".
  • No tables or icons replacing text.
  • All content selectable as text.
  • With 15 or more years of experience, you may not need to detail every role equally: you can keep your last 3 or 4 jobs with concrete achievements and group the rest with just title, company, and dates.
Recommendation

Keywords matter more than they seem

  • Some systems look for literal matches, not synonyms.
  • If the posting says "agile project management" and your CV says "iterative methodologies", the system may not connect the two.
  • Review the posting and work its terms into your summary and experience naturally, without repeating them in a forced way.
Recommendation

Show your contribution, without inventing

  • When an achievement was a team effort, describe your specific part: it tends to be more credible.
  • Use figures you know and can explain in an interview.
  • CVmundi doesn't write your achievements: it reviews the format of what you already wrote.
Checklist

Quick checklist

  • Is your CV in a single column?
  • Do you use standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills)?
  • Do you avoid tables and icons that replace text?
  • Can all the content be selected as text?
  • Did you include key terms from the posting naturally?
  • Do your achievements have figures you can explain?
  • Did you describe your contribution without inventing?
How CVmundi does it

Three steps, no account needed

1. Upload your CVAs a PDF or Word file, with your country and industry.
2. We check how it readsAgainst sourced rules on how selection systems usually read documents.
3. You get your assessmentYou see what reads well and what could improve. You decide what to apply.
  • No outside checker has access to the inner workings of each system, and CVmundi doesn't either: we read your document and explain why something may read poorly.
  • We don't apply for you: nothing is sent to any company.
